I now have 100% this game and still find the opening region a slog on my subsequent playthroughs. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is set 1000 years into the future, so no, you dont need to play 1. It personally took me around 30 hours before I was glued to it and finally saw the hype behind what made this game so acclaimed. There are tons of legit builds from some hardcore players (e.g. The first act is a masterpiece and you’ll see people meme about never getting to the rest of the game because it’s just that good. The pacing was drastically improved and I have over five playthroughs of the game. The guides were also really badly made and to this day, there is no build maker like Sin Tee with his level of min/max. It made me think that this type of game wasn’t for me. You’ll see tons of posts in the past from people asking when the game gets good. I was a newcomer to the Divinity series and first started with the first DOS but personally couldn’t get past the first town/region. It also forced me to actually learn how to steal shit, which I never really did in the first game, so I could get enough gold for all the skillbooks and still get decent gear. On my first playthrough of DOS2, all of my characters had like at least 2x as many skills learned as they actually needed, in part just so I could try them all and see what they did, but also because the power to just memorize/unmemorize freely whenever I wanted was so intoxicating. Also, there’s that one journal or something you can find where some cranky old person is complaining about how everyone made their own gear back in their day, and kids these days just buy everything. I do miss being able to craft actually good stuff in DOS1, but the separation of combat and civil ability points makes up for it mostly. I absolutely adored DOS1, but I have an in-progress save that I will probably never finish because the DOS2 QOL improvements are so much better.
